PSY 234 | Psychology of Addictions

Overview of the psychology of addictive behavior, psychophysiology of the brain and the addictive process. Addiction to alcohol, illicit drugs, over-the-counter medications, psycho-pharmaceuticals, food, gambling and sex are introduced. The impact of the addictive cycle on the individual, the family, and society as a whole is explored.

Learning Outcomes of the Course:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the methods psychologists use to explore psychological phenomena.
2. Describe major concepts and theories within addiction psychology.
3. Explain the concept of addiction and various types of addictive behavior.
4. Identify ways in which the central nervous system and other bodily systems process chemical substances.
