A study of the nature and evolution of the novel, including the social conditions that stimulated its growth and the special characteristics and possibilities of the genre. Emphasis will fall on British and American novels from the 18th century to the present, including trends such as the novel of manners, realism, symbolic and impressionistic realism, and recent experiments ("fabulation," the non fiction novel). Meets General Education Humanities requirement.
