Introduces students to correctional institutions by examining the history and philosophy of corrections; the social organization of prison societies as total institutions; the management of prisons; prison violence and court mandated attempts to restore civility; jails and community corrections; and critiques of traditional approaches to corrections. Prerequisite: SOC 100 or equivalent and one 200 level or one 300 level Sociology course.
