3 credits

Visual Communication is the study of human expression through a broad spectrum of visual forms. It explores the theories, processes, techniques, ethical considerations, editorial judgments, and social impacts of visual communication in a variety of contexts, which include: visual communication theory; visual cues; visual persuasion in advertising; visual stereotypes in popular culture; persuasion vs. propaganda, and the history, evolution and social dimensions of graphic design, photography, typography film, TV, animation, comic books, and graphic novels. This course addresses the issues and challenges associated with the creation and experience of visual media in a diverse society. Included in the curriculum are readings, videos, and assignments that encourage students to analyze the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of visual media and, as a result, contribute to individual and group identity pertaining to race, class, gender, and other cultural factors. Students develop an awareness of how their own cultural identities (race, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, ability) and the cultural identities of others have been constructed through various visual media.Meets SUNY General Education requirement for Diversity: Equity, Inclusion & Social Justice (DVRS)
