A survey of the basic narrative of the growth anddevelopment of America from native pre-historythrough the early Republic. The course will offer ageneral examination of Native America culturally,socially and politically. European and Africaninfluences on American history (from exploration tocolonization) will be considered. The early years of theUnited States (from the American Revolution to thecultural, social, religious, and political developmentof the Republic) with sensitivity to American unity anddiversity will be examined. The emerging internationalrole of the colonies/states will be considered. Whilethe major focus of the course is on pre-nineteenthcentury history, the course will extend into the 19thcentury in order to provide insight into results ofthemes examined in the course of the study (historicalcontinuity).
