Students study the biology of the many groups of microorganisms with an emphasis on bacteria. Topics include the development of the field of microbiology, microbial structure, metabolism, and ecology. There is a strong emphasis placed on human-microbial interactions including important human pathogens, disease transmission and control, immunity, and biotechnology. Corequisite: SCI 2114 Microbiology Laboratory. Prerequisite: SCI 1050 Introduction to Biology I and SCI 1051 Introduction to Biology I Lab OR SCI 1124 Principles of Biology I and SCI 1125 Principles of Biology I Lab OR Permission of Instructor.
