Survey of Speculative Fiction
In this course students examine the major theories and representative works of speculative fiction, a broad category encompassing the genres of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, superhero fiction, and more. Although the course centers on the traditional literary media of the short story and the novel, additional media of significance for speculative fiction including film, television, comics, and games are also considered. Students produce written and oral presentations comparing and evaluating the themes, tropes, and techniques of speculative thought across these various genres and media.
