A survey of the works of representative African American folktales and African American writers. Readings explore the construction of African American identities, communities, and social roles, as well as the societal structures and systems that create and perpetuate dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity that have shaped African American experiences and literature. Some research is required. Prerequisite: ENG 101 and ENG 102.
