This course introduces trends in "classical" music in Western civilization from the Middle Ages through the present and emphasizes the relationship between great works of music and other events in history and the arts. Concentrated listening is encouraged to increase music perception and enjoyment. Students will be asked to identify and classify various styles of music by recognition of instruments, styles and forms, as well as basic rhythmic, melodic and harmonic concepts.
