CHEM 111
General Chemistry I (C)

The first semester of a two-semester university-level general chemistry course. This first part will focus on understanding the basic principles of chemistry and why matter behaves as it does. Topics include: mathematics of chemistry, nomenclature, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, thermochemistry, atomic structure, chemical bonding and molecular structure. Homework components require access to a computer the internet. Course fee of $25 is required. Prerequisite: A score of 75 or higher on the New York State Regents' exam in high school chemistry, or CHEM 101 with a grade of "C" or better, and placement in MATH 111 or higher, or permission of the instructor; co-requisite CHEM 111Y and CHEM 111X [Fall, Spring] Gen Ed Natural Sciences (and Scientific Reasoning), Liberal Arts/Sciences Elective
