This course is an introductory level study of the Earth's environmental systems and the role of humans in those systems. Students will be introduced to key elements of ecology and ecosystem sciences, focusing on their function and importance for human societies, as well as the impact of human activity on these systems. The course stresses the roles of resource availability and use, biogeochemical cycling, and anthropogenic effects, both locally and globally. This course also addresses the importance of maintaining the natural functioning of environmental systems for the well-being of human society, culture, and survival.
